A Collection of Life Of Pi Quotes

A Collection of Life Of Pi Quotes

The Life of Pi is a novel published in September 2001 by author Yann Martel.  It tells the story of a young man who is shipwrecked with a Bengal tiger on an island.  The story explores issues of religion and spirituality, and won the Man Booker Prize for fiction as well as many other awards around the world after its publication. The thought-provoking novel has provided a number of popular quotes that have become famous in the years since it appeared on book shelves.  This has made the book something of a classic and has led to an adaptation for the big screen expected to be released in 2012.  Many Life of Pi quotes from the book are expected to make the transition to the big screen and cause the book’s fame to grow further.

Some of the most famous Life of Pi Quotes are religious in nature, as the protaganist ponders issues of faith.  Some of these religious Life of Pi quotes include:

“I cannot think of a better way to spread the faith. No thundering from a pulpit, no condemnation from bad churches, no peer pressure, just a book of scripture quietly waiting to say hello, as gentle and powerful as a little girl’s kiss on your cheek.” (Chapter 73, pg 230).

“Despair was a heavy blackness that let no light in or out. It was a hell beyond expression. I thank God it always passed. A school of fish appeared around the net or a knot cried out to be reknotted. Or I thought of my family, of how they were spared this terrible agony. The blackness would stir and eventually go away, and God would remain, a shining point of light in my heart. I would go on loving.” (Chapter 74, pg 232)

There are also Life of Pi quotes that are inspirational and have become popularly used even beyond the fans of the book, such as the following Life of Pi Quotes regarding faith and fear:

“I must say a word about fear. It is life’s only true opponent. Only fear can defeat life.” (Chapter 56, pg 178)

“If you stumble at mere believability, what are you living for? Isn’t love hard to believe?” (Chapter 99, pg 330)

Other Life of Pi quotes are simply examples of the beautiful prose and keen observation that fill the novel.  They are among the mose thoughtful Life of Pi quotes, such as:

“The reason death sticks so closely to life isn’t biological necessity—it’s envy. Life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it, a jealous, possessive love that grabs at what it can. But life leaps over oblivion lightly, losing only a thing or two of no importance, and gloom is but the passing shadow of a cloud.” (Chapter 1, pg 6)

Of course, everyone who reads the book will have their own favorite Life of Pi quotes, and the novel is filled with plenty of things to give the reader pause and to be remembered for many years.  Life of Pi quotes appear in many different places as those who have read the book spread them to others.
