A Guide to the Online Phlebotomy Certification Exam

Medical school takes years of college, followed by more years of special training, followed by even more years of internships. Not only that, but it also takes thousands of dollars each year, digging you deep into student loan debt before you can even make the money you need to pay off those debts. You may have a desire to work in the medical feild, to help other people with their health problems, but all those years suck up more time and money than you may have available to you.

Thankfully, you can start out your career with a much easier, faster, and cheaper option: online phlebotomy certification. Whether you want the opportunity to work in the medical field while training for other careers, or you just want an easier way to work in the field of your dreams, phlebotomy certification can get you working in the medical field in as little as four to six weeks.

Phlebotomy is area of medical work involving the drawing of blood from veins. This might be for an annual testing to check and make sure that the patient’s body is working properly, or it might be for specific tests, to check for certain conditions that the patient might have. Phlebotomists also are called on to prepare intravenous therapy, inserting the needle into the vein for the IV tubing to be attached. This is crucial for patient health during medical procedures or hospital stays.

Different online training courses will take different lengths of time, from four to six weeks, and vary in cost. You will want to check with state requirements for phlebotomists, though, as different states may have different training requirements than what some programs provide. You need to make sure that the program you select will satisfy all requirements for your state so you can gain your certification without any problems.

For a faster method, some programs offer a three-day course, with two days spent taking an intensive series of online courses and tests, and a third day spent in hands-on training, practicing the actual techniques and learning the different tools. While these programs get you working in the field much faster, they also tend to be much more expensive than other programs. Again, you will also want to make sure that these programs fit your state’s requirements.

At the end of the programs, you will take the final test, a comprehensive exam covering all crucial topics a phlebotomist must know. These may include patient safety and health, blood draw locations, and avoiding infections. Once the exam is passed, you will receive your certificate and can begin seeking employment. This certificate can be immediately printed from your computer when you go through the training online.

You most likely remember a time in your past when a person drew your blood and really didn’t know what he or she was doing, causing undue pain or distress. You probably also remember a time when you got a blood draw from a person who made it a snap, relatively painless and quick. You have a chance to be that person in someone’s life, making a rather unpleasant experience as comfortable and pain-free as possible – and all with a quick, fast, and relatively inexpensive online training in phlebotomy.
