All About Healthcare Marketing Jobs

Are you interested in an exciting, fast-paced career in the healthcare field?  Would you like to combine your excellent sales and marketing skills with your love of people to promote helpful and healthy products?  If so, you may want to consider a career in healthcare marketing.  Here we will provide some basic information about the healthcare marketing profession and list some specific job data which will help you become more familiar with this increasingly popular career choice.

What Exactly Is Healthcare Marketing?

Healthcare marketing jobs primarily involve setting up meetings with healthcare professionals across many disciplines and marketing a particular product or brand name.  These products can range from pharmaceuticals to hospital equipment, but in most cases there are many like-products under a single brand name.

Professionals in the healthcare marketing field regularly communicate with healthcare staff including doctors, nurses, pharmacists and administrative personnel.  They must do this in order to keep these people abreast of new and improved products and continue to promote existing ones.

Naturally, some sales and marketing experience and/or training is a must for a healthcare marketer, as is a working knowledge of the products you are promoting.  If you are marketing a pharmaceutical line, for example, you will probably need some college training in biology and/or chemistry before you would be considered for this type of position.  This will ensure that you can intelligently and competently address the healthcare providers you serve and answer any pertinent questions about the product(s).

Perhaps the most important quality that a healthcare marketer can possess is the ability to forge cordial, professional and lasting relationships with the people they serve—a quality that most healthcare marketers try to perfect very early in their careers in order to remain content with both the personal and financial aspects of the position.  Quite simply, more sales equals more money.

How to Find a Healthcare Marketing Job

Ironically, healthcare marketing jobs are not to be found in medical establishments which serve patients, but rather at companies whose main consumer of their products is the healthcare industry.  Some of these companies include:

  • Pharmaceutical Companies.  The wealthy pharmaceutical companies are always looking for people who can introduce and market new and existing medications for a variety of conditions.  Those who excel in marketing pharmaceuticals can carve out a very nice career for themselves.
  • Hospital Supply.  Hospital supply companies sell everything from stethoscopes to wheelchairs and are consistently looking for qualified individuals to become part of their team.
  • High-Tech Firms.  By high tech we are now referring to very expensive and specialized pieces of equipment used in a medical office and/or hospital setting.  This includes anything from x-ray machines to heart monitors.

Healthcare marketers are traditionally compensated with a base salary package with bonuses for reaching certain sales figures in a given time period.  These are called commissions and are the reason why qualified salespeople who perfect their craft can often earn upwards of $100,000 a year.  However, if you’re a person who doesn’t like to interact with people on a daily basis, this may not be the career for you.
