How to Choose an Adjustable Piano Bench

How to Choose an Adjustable Piano Bench

Whether you are a long time piano player or just getting started with learning the instrument, an adjustable piano bench is a great investment.  Sitting properly and at the right height for your piano can make a big difference in your playing ability and comfort level as well.  An adjustable piano bench makes it easy to get the seat to just the right height for you, so that you can play at your best and avoid problems like back and neck pain over time.

An adjustable piano bench is also the perfect choice for any home or music studio where people of different heights will be using the piano.  It is especially difficult for a young child to reach the keys and achieve proper placement of the fingers on the keys.  Placing an extra cushion on your piano bench is a temporary solution at best; it can slip and slide and still only allows for a finite amount of extra height.  Instead, an adjustable piano bench lets you get the seat right where you want it and is secure and steady.

There are a few options for an adjustable piano bench on the market.  The most basic is a stool, that can be adjusted up and down.  Most players will find the seat a little small on this, however, and it does not allow room for an instructor or second player to sit down as well.  The next type is a standard looking bench seat.  It can be either a wood seat or a padded one covered in either leather or vinyl.  The padded tops are available in smooth or flocked options.  This is really a person choice; the difference is mainly in the appearance of the bench.  Most people who spend a lot of time practicing will appreciate an adjustable piano bench with some form of padding, however.

There are also twin seat options for an adjustable piano bench; these allow two sections of the seat to be adjusted to different heights.  This type of seat is perfect for anyone who wants to teach piano lessons, allowing the teacher and student to adjust their own part of the seat to the right height.  Twin seats are also a great choice for people who want to play duets together but are of different height.

Most of the adjustable piano bench options on the market also include storage space beneath the seat itself, perfect for keeping your sheet music and other accessories handy, but cleaned up and put away when you are done playing.

There is a great deal of range in price on adjustable piano bench choices, and your budget will definitely dictate some portion of your purchase decision.  Look for a bench that is sturdy and will last a long time; in some cases a little extra expense may be required, but if you are serious about playing the piano, it will be well worth it in the long run.  A good adjustable piano bench is an investment in beautiful music!
