How to Choose the Camping Lantern That’s Right for You

Have you ever wondered how to choose the camping lantern that’s right for you? If you are an outdoors type of person, whether you are trekking through the wilderness, climbing a mountain or camping out in a major park, having the right lantern is essential, not just for lighting purposes, but for safety. The last thing that you need to have happen is to accidentally break a lantern or cause a fire because the lantern was not the right type to fit your needs. Worse, though the lantern may have insufficient light, something that makes overnight trips into the wilds difficult and sometimes dangerous.

When you’re looking for a camping lantern, there are three main lighting types which you can choose from: gas, liquid and electric. Each one is specially designed for different purposes, some being weaker or stronger in specific areas.

The gas lantern is highly convenient, perfect for running off propane canisters, which come in a variety of sizes and can be screwed in tightly and easily into the base of your lantern. You can also change them quickly when your previous canister runs out. In fact, you might even be able to use your camping stove’s gas canister instead of transporting the heavy weight of numerous canisters.

However, gas camping lanterns are not always the best option if you are planning on traveling a long distance on foot, as the weight of many canisters not ideal for hiking, and the mantles are fragile and break easily while on the move. Additionally, the flame is very hot and may emit harmful fumes that cannot be confined in tents or enclosed types of spaces, and as such might not be permitted in some recreational or park areas. Finally, they can be noisy, impacting on the peaceful environment that you are no doubt hoping to enjoy.

Liquid type light lanterns are another form of camping lantern that you might use. They use gasoline, a white type of gas or kerosene. Though they provide a very bright type of light, they are also highly flammable and, like the gas variety, are very much a disadvantage if you are carrying your equipment across long distances. Again, their flammable nature might be prohibited in certain locations.

The final choice of camping lantern is run by electricity. Until recently, the main downside was that the lantern had to run on batteries, but now there are options which are rechargeable, hand cranked or use solar power, so replacement batteries aren’t necessary. New electric camping lanterns also use LED bulbs to reduce the amount of electricity that’s needed to produce the same amount of light as filament bulbs.

Each camping lantern type has its place, so it’s necessary to take into account the type of camping you’ll be doing when selecting your own camping lantern. Have fun and enjoy the great outdoors!
