How to Choose the Right Crepe Maker

How to Choose the Right Crepe Maker

Crepes are a delicious pancake alternative that can be served in many different ways, from sweet to savoury.  A crepe maker can take a lot of the work and difficulty out of making crepes, which can be challenging if you don’t have a lot of practice.  A crepe maker is also a quick way to make a large batch of crepes to serve up to a crowd, whether for a holiday brunch or any celebration.  Choosing from the many crepe maker options on the market can be confusing, but there are a few main things to keep in mind.

The right crepe maker shouldn’t be terribly expensive.  Don’t overpay for a brand name unless you are certain the price is worthwhile.  For home use, there is no reason to pay more than about $40 for a good crepe maker; there are plenty of far more expensive models out there, but they are far beyond what the average person needs for occasional crepe cooking.  Of course, you do want to choose a reputable brand, but don’t feel the need to purchase professional level gear.

Any good crepe maker should have a nonstick surface on the inside.  This is absolutely vital to making good crepes as the hardest part of making crepes is getting them from the pan to the plate in one piece!  Look for a solid nonstick surface that doesn’t scratch easily.  It is never recommended that you use a metal utensil on a nonstick surface, but it should not scratch so easily that slight contact leaves a mark.

Another consideration in choosing a crepe maker is a cordless or corded model.  Cordless models have the advantage of being easier to work with because the cord doesn’t get in the way.  Models with a cord, however, may be more powerful and provide stronger heat.  They are also often more affordable.  If you do find that the cord gets in your way, however, than the investment in a cordless crepe maker might be the right choice for you.

A good crepe maker should also be easy to clean.  Look for one that doesn’t have a lot of nooks and crannies that crepe batter might leak into and be difficult to clean out afterwards.  You should be able to simply wipe the cooking plates clean as most crepe maker models are not able to be submerged in water due to the electrical aspects.  Some crepe makers may also have removable plates that are actually dishwasher safe, making cleanup a breeze.

Be aware of the size of the crepe maker as well before you make a purchase.  The crepes should not be too small but also shouldn’t be too large or they become difficult to work with.  Something in the range of 7-8 inches is about right for most crepe making applications.

Whether you are a long time crepe lover or are new to making these delicious French treats, you will find that a crepe maker makes the job quick, easy and fun, and you will want to make crepes all the time!
