How to Make a Lemon Drop Martini

A lemon drop martini is a delicious and popular cocktail that is both easy and fun to make.  Whether you simply want to relax with a drink after a long day at work, or are looking to impress a crowd of friends with your bartending prowess, the lemon drop martini is sure to please.  There are a few different methods of making a good lemon drop martini, and you can choose the one that best suits your personal taste.

To keep it simple, you can make your lemon drop martini using a cocktail mix.  These mixes usually only require that you add the alcohol, in this case vodka, and shake up in a cocktail shaker before serving.  This is a quick and convenient way to make your lemon drop martini, and is a good choice when you are making cocktails for a crowd and need to produce a lot of drinks quickly.

If you are a purist, however, or simply want to impress some friends with your delicious cocktails made from scratch, then there are a few easy recipes you can select from to make a great lemon drop martini.  Most recipes use the same basic ingredients, with a  few small changes.  The basic ingredients for any lemon drop martini are vodka, lemon juice, a citrus liqueur like triple sec, and a sweetener of some kind.  The sweetener helps to break down the tartness of the lemons and can be in the form of a finely ground sugar or a simple syrup, or even come from one of the other ingredients.

For an easy and basic lemon drop martini, mix 1.5 ounces of vodka, .5 ounces of triple sec, .75 ounces of freshly squeezed lemon juice and one teaspoon of finely ground sugar in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake until frost forms on the outside of the cocktail shaker, and then serve in a chilled martini glass.  For an added touch, you can sugar the rim of the glass with more of the finely ground sugar.  Finish with a twist of lemon peel or a thin slice of lemon as a garnish.

Another lemon drop martini recipe that is a little different uses 2 ounces of citrus infused vodka, .25 ounces of freshly squeezed lemon juice and .5 ounces each of triple sec and a prepared sweet and sour mix.  Add a tablespoon of finely ground sugar and shake with ice just as above.  This recipe adds the sweet and sour mix, which will give an extra tartness to the drink as well as a more syrupy sweetness.

Every good lemon drop martini starts with freshly squeezed lemon juice, as you will notice both recipes call for above.  Lemon juice from a bottle will not have the same strong lemon flavor and simply won’t give the same sort of bite to your lemon drop.  Finish your lemon drop martini with the sugared rim and a lemony garnish and serve in a chilled glass, and your friends will be coming back to you for another round before you know it!
