Sandbox Covers: What Are Your Options?

Sandbox Covers: What Are Your Options?

Do you have a backyard sandbox that needs a sandbox cover? Have you even thought about why a sandbox cover is so essential to your child’s safety? It might be something to which you’ve never even given a second thought, but a sandbox cover is absolutely vital for the complete protection of this very popular and often dangerous play area. Here we will take a look at why sandbox covers are so important, along with two of the options for obtaining one for your own backyard.

Why Is Having a Sandbox Cover Important?

We all know that a sandbox is typically a magnet for any child in the area—a place to dig imaginary forts, race Hot Wheel cars and build sand castles—but unfortunately these fun play areas can also be a magnet for other, less desirable objects as well. During the day and through the night, sandboxes can collect all kinds of things, including rocks, leaves, trash (including glass items) and oh yes, animal droppings. Certainly hard, flat ground can also collect these items, but because sand is so porous and shifty, these items can often lay hidden beneath the sand until accidentally discovered by an unsuspecting child.
A sandbox cover can help reduce the amount of debris which can be collected in sandboxes and help keep your child perpetually safe at play.

Obtaining a Sandbox Cover: Two Options

If you want to obtain a sandbox cover you essentially have two options: buy one or make one. Here we look at both in more detail.

Purchasing a Sandbox Cover

Sandbox covers can be purchased in-store or online, usually from playground supply dealers. These come in a variety of shapes and styles and can even be specially made to fit the dimensions of your sandbox at home. Sandbox covers are made from wood, plastic, vinyl and even canvas and are relatively inexpensive for the amount of protection they provide.

Making a Sandbox Cover

If you’re a do-it-yourselfer or just someone who wants to save a few bucks, making a sandbox cover may be a more attractive option. Just as with those sandbox covers you can purchase from stores, the homemade style you choose can be made from a variety of materials, however, if the sandbox is located completely outdoors you’ll definitely want to use a material which is water resistant to help prevent the sandbox from becoming flooded. Most do-it-yourselfers prefer a plastic tarp-like material for this type of project.

Measure the length, width and depth of the sandbox walls, and cut out a piece of plastic large enough to completely cover the sandbox and reach at least halfway down the outside walls. From here you have several options. You can fasten the cover around the sandbox using grommets and a drill, or you can tightly weave elastic material around the tarp so that it fits snugly around the base of the walls. A tight seal is absolutely crucial to permit weather elements from blowing the tarp away.

Whether you decide to make or purchase a sandbox cover, the importance of these nifty covers cannot be overstated. Help ensure your child’s safety by keeping his/her favorite play area protected and secure.
