In recent years fish oil has become one of the most popular supplements on the market due to it’s importance as an excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids.  Recently, you may have seen deep sea fish oil join the market along with the many other fish oil products available.  Deep sea fish oil is generally fish oil that has come from fish deeper out in the ocean as the name implies, rather than from sources closer to the shore.  What does that mean to your health?  Experts in the area of fish oil as an Omega-3 source generally agree that deep sea fish oil is probably not much different from other fish oils.

There are a few species of fish that provide the best source of fish oil, and they are generally species that prefer shallower to middle depth waters.  These fish include herring, mackeral, and sardines.  These fish species are those most often used to create fish oil supplements.  Deep sea fish oil may be obtained from other species, but because deep sea fish tend to be less oily than those swimming in shallower waters, it may require more of those fish to obtain the same amount of oil.  Thus deep sea fish oil can be a bit more pricy, due to the nature of having to fish so far out, and obtain more fish to get the oil.  There are some people who beleive this fish oil is of much higher quality and worth the extra expense.

The benefits of deep sea fish oil are much the same as the benefits of any other fish oil on the market; fish oil and the omega-3′s found in it have been connected with improved heart health, support of healthy brain and eye development in babies, lowering cholesterol, reducing the risk of diabetes and many other health benefits.  As a result of the still emerging research on the importance of Omega-3 fatty acids, deep sea fish oil and other fish oils have become one of the most popular supplements in recent years for people of all ages and walks of life.

Pregnant women can benefit from deep sea fish oil as can their unborn babies and it is thus highly recommended during pregnancy. The baby’s brain and eye development is greatly supported by a proper intake of Omega-3′s by the mother during the first months of pregnancy especillay but into the rest of the pregnancy as well.

An important precaution to keep in mind when selecting deep sea fish oil is to look for a product that is as low in mercury as possible.  High levels of mercury can be dangerous especially in pregnant women, and some types of fish carry a much higher mercury level than others.  Be sure to do your research on the brand of deep sea fish oil you are purchasing in order to make sure you are getting all of the benefits of fish oil without the potential dangers of mercury.  Good brands will use low-mercury fish sources to provide a healthy choice.
